IKEA: The Allen Key
This is IKEA’s story and I’m choosing an Allen key.
The Allen Key perfectly represents IKEA’s core philosophy which is democratic design, radical cost-efficiency through flat-packing and their shared labour model.

The concept of handing a customer an L shaped key turns them into an active participant in building their home, creating a personal sense of
accomplishment.
IKEA was founded in Smaland, a region in Sweden known historically for poor, rocky soil. Locals survived by being exceptionally thrifty, practical and waste-conscious. They Allen Key embodies this exact “waste nothing” mindset. It is cheap to produce, requires minimal material and eliminates the need for expensive tools.
